Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour Overviews

Join our Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour to Nepal's dramatic Upper Mustang region to witness its vibrant annual Tiji Festival, a sacred three-day celebration of Buddhist culture in the former forbidden Kingdom of Lo.

Our exhilarating jeep tour escorts you deep into this isolated trans-Himalayan area bordering Tibet. The region is a hidden world of red cliff-lined valleys dotted with whitewashed villages, ancient monasteries, and medieval walled cities barely touched by modernity.

Before starting the journey to Upper Mustang, we'll explore Kathmandu's heritage sites. The trip begins with a flight viewing mountain vistas from Pokhara. Then we'll fly north to Jomsom village, the gateway between the mountain region.

Our journey upstream along the mighty Kali Gandaki River truly begins as the landscape turns increasingly arid and starkly Beautiful. Pausing to explore hillside caves and towns lost in time along the way, we'll overnight in local teahouses.

During the period, we can interact with an otherworldly mix of peoples following Tibetan Buddhism, and Bon shamanistic traditions largely vanished elsewhere.

The stunning centerpiece of the Upper Mustang region is Lo Manthang, an astonishing medieval walled city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Lo. It largely still retains that regal atmosphere today.

Founded in 1380, this remote outpost looks like a film set with its towering clay walls, arched gateways, monasteries, and twisted streets that transport you back centuries in time.

One of the last remnants of historic Tibetan culture left in the world, here you'll see crimson-clad monks, hearty yaks, and proud local traditions.

As honored guests, we'll celebrate the Tiji Festival in its full glory, through dances and centuries-old ceremonies intended to conquer negativity across the land.

FAQs

When is the best time to visit Upper Mustang for the Tiji Festival?

The optimal time to visit the Upper Mustang for the Tiji Festival is in the spring, which is the middle of May. This coincides with the annual Tiji Festival. The festival occurs once a year, based on the Tibetan calendar. The festival features elaborate ritual masked dances performed by Buddhist monks in Lo Manthang and other villages.

What type of accommodations are available on the tour?

Accommodations on the Upper Mustang Tour range from basic guesthouses run by local families to simple teahouses. Luxury hotels are not available due to the remote location. Expect shared bathrooms and dorm-style lodging. However, the accommodations offer an authentic cultural experience.

Is it safe to travel to Upper Mustang?

Upper Mustang is considered very safe for tourists and has seen very few travel-related incidents. Nepali people are friendly, honest, and hospitable. However, basic precautions regarding your belongings are always advised during travel. It's best to travel with a guide who can help communicate with locals.

What food is served on the tour? Can you accommodate dietary needs?

Traditional Nepali food is served throughout the tour, including dal bhat (lentils and rice), momos (dumplings), chapati bread, potatoes, and vegetables. Besides, some cuisines are continental as well as Tibetan.

Meals are simple but satisfy hunger after a day of activities. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated by notifying your tour organizer in advance. Be advised that specialty foods may not be available at remote guesthouses.

Are permits required to visit Upper Mustang?

Yes, government permits are required for foreign travelers to enter Upper Mustang, with costs of $500 per person. Tour agencies will acquire the permits for you, but be sure to provide a copy of your passport well in advance of the trip. Solo travelers can join existing tour groups to obtain permits.

Is the Jeep Tour suitable for all ages?

The Jeep Tour is appropriate for most age groups since it does not involve long days of strenuous hiking. However, very young children under five years old may have some difficulties due to the basic demands of traveling in the region.

Older children and healthy seniors are certainly able to manage the tour comfortably. Jeep transportation makes it more accessible for a wider range of ages than trekking. But travelers should be prepared for full days of activity and some rough jeep rides on rough terrain. As long as you are in reasonable condition, age is not a limiting factor.

What is the best way to get Nepali Rupees for the trip?

The best way to get Nepali Rupees is to use ATMs once you arrive in Nepal, especially in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. This will provide you with the current exchange rate.

Only use ATMs inside banks or reputable locations. Exchanging cash is also an option, but rates may vary.

How much spending money should I budget for the tour?

Excluding the tour cost, around $30-35 USD per day is sufficient for meals, drinks, souvenirs, and tips for local guides. There are few big expenses, but many small costs add up. Bring extras if you want to purchase local crafts or stay longer in Kathmandu. Make sure to have cash in small bills and coins since change is limited in rural Nepal.

Is wifi or internet access available on the tour?

Wifi and internet access is very limited in the Upper Mustang region due to the remoteness. Some guesthouses may have wifi, but it is unreliable. Getting a complete digital detox can be enjoyable, but bring books or games as alternative entertainment. Let your family know not to expect frequent contact.

Additional Information

The optimal time for our Upper Mustang Tiji Festival jeep adventure is mid-May when the sacred three-day Tiji Festival is held in Lo Manthang. The dates for 2024 are May 16th to 18th. This colorful Buddhist celebration falls during spring, the most stunning season to travel in Nepal.

As winter snow melts, new plant growth emerges, blanketing the Trans-Himalayan mountain valleys in wildflowers. The comfortable weather also makes travel and outdoor exploration ideal.

Crisp, sunny days with refreshing temperatures transition to cool, clear nights perfect for stargazing at quaint village guesthouses along our route.

Since the Tiji Festival happens only once annually in May, joining our tour during this season is mesmerizing. It allows you to experience Upper Mustang at its most beautiful and culturally vibrant while attending a landmark religious event unavailable any other time of year.

During our Jeep tour through the remote mountain region of Upper Mustang, each village and town offered traditional teahouses and restaurants. Those accommodations offer hearty meals to fuel our Himalayan adventure.

We can try authentic Nepali and Tibetan cuisine like dal bhat - lentil soup served over steamed rice - as well as thick noodle soup called thukpa, juicy yak steaks, and steaming Sherpa stew with potatoes and vegetables.

For breakfast, most places serve staples like Tibetan bread or chapati, French toast, cornflakes, potatoes, eggs made to order, and porridge, along with caffeinated coffee and tea to perk up early risers.

Lunches tend to feature items like dumplings called momos, macaroni, sandwiches, spring rolls, and even pizza!

Dinners offer all of the above plus local dishes like rice with curry. Desserts in these mountain communities are often traditional Tibetan sweet breads or cakes.

Going to bed nourished after meals overlooking the Himalayas is another magical memory from the journey!

Our tour provides comfortable lodging throughout our journey to Mustang and back. We'll overnight in quality three-star hotels when we kick off the trip in Kathmandu and while exploring Pokhara.

Once our 4WD vehicles reach the Mustang region, we will switch to traditional teahouses, which offer basic but cozy rooms with twin beds and shared bathrooms. Some feature outdoor courtyards where we can relax among the mountains.

Guests have the option to request single supplement private rooms for an additional charge. Though rustic, these family-run Mustang lodges allow us to enjoy views of nearby peaks or red cliffs dotted with ancient cave dwellings.

After bidding the lost horizon of Upper Mustang goodbye, we'll conclude by spending our final nights back in finer Nepali hotels before departure.

The Upper Mustang jeep tour is considered an easy trip that most travelers can accomplish. You won't have to walk very much on the tour since a jeep will transport you to most of the attractions and sites. This makes it convenient for covering longer distances in the region comfortably.

While lengthy hiking isn't required, you should still be in decent physical health and condition to fully participate in the tour activities. You'll need enough fitness and endurance for some light walking, exploring villages, taking photographs, and handling the basic rigors of traveling. Though the tour isn't extremely challenging, you'll get more enjoyment if you have reasonable mobility and stamina.

The tour does not involve any technically difficult activities that require special skills. For example, you won't have to climb mountains or tackle tough terrain. Any obstacles faced, such as rough jeep rides or walking uphill, can be overcome with some determination and effort. No prior experience with adventurous activities is necessary.

When traveling through high mountain regions like the Himalayas, altitude sickness is always a possibility as our bodies adjust to less oxygen in the air.

On this jeep tour, we will reach elevations around 3,840 m. Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, or dizziness. To help acclimatize and prevent problems, we will take the journey slowly - spending several nights sleeping at lower elevations first before proceeding higher up each day.

Be sure to rest properly, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, avoid overexertion, and don't drink alcohol.

If symptoms seem severe, medicines called Diamox may be recommended. But pacing ourselves appropriately should mean altitude has minimal impact on tour activities.

Exploring ancient sites and enjoying the Tiji Festival open-air dances and ceremonies in Upper Mustang's crisp, high-desert air can be less harmful. Just take it easy and notify guides if you need extra assistance!

When going on the Upper Mustang jeep tour, it's important to get travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you in case something unexpected happens on your trip. It can cover costs for things like:

  • Canceling your trip - If you get sick or there's an emergency at home, travel insurance can refund you for the cost of the tour if you have to cancel.
  • Medical expenses - If you get hurt or sick while on the tour, insurance helps pay for doctors, hospitals, and medicines.
  • Evacuation - If you are somewhere remote like Upper Mustang and need an emergency helicopter rescue, insurance can cover this expensive cost.
  • Lost luggage - If the airline loses your bags, insurance can pay to replace your belongings.
  • Theft - If someone steals your camera, jewelry, etc, you can claim to get money to replace them.

Getting travel insurance for the Upper Mustang tour gives you peace of mind. But to be sure you understand exactly what is and isn't covered, make sure you read the policy terms. You can relax and enjoy your Upper Mustang experience when you have insurance!

Upper Mustang is a special region that was closed to visitors until 1992. This means it is one of the most preserved and traditional areas in the world. To protect the culture and environment, tourists need to get a special permit to enter Upper Mustang.
